Israeli military airstrikes on Syrian chemical weapons research center

According to a report by the Syrian state media, Israel carried out multiple attacks on the outskirts of Hama province in Syria on Sunday (September 8), resulting in the death of 5 people and at least 19 people being injured.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that in the attacks near the city of Maysaf in Hama province, 5 people were killed, 19 were injured, with several sustaining serious injuries.

Earlier that day, the media cited a local health official stating that 4 people had died and 13 were injured, with ambulances still transporting the wounded.

The state-run news agency also quoted a military source as saying, “The enemy Israel launched airstrikes from the northwest of Lebanon targeting some military positions in the central region,” shortly before 8:30 pm local time on Sunday night.

The source mentioned that the Syrian air defense intercepted and shot down some missiles.

Intelligence sources from two regions mentioned that a major military research center producing chemical weapons near Maysaf was targeted in the attacks multiple times. It is believed that a group of Iranian military experts involved in weapon production reside there.

The Syrian state media further reported that the attacks sparked two large fires, with firefighters working to extinguish them.

Israel did not immediately comment, as it typically refrains from commenting on specific reports of attacks in Syria.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war, one of the most striking attacks in Syria occurred in April when suspected Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian embassy, causing the death of 7 military advisors according to Iran, including 3 senior commanders.

Since Hamas raided southern Israel on October 7 last year, Israel has intensified its strikes against Iranian-backed Syrian armed targets and targeted Syrian air defense systems along with some Syrian forces.
