Israeli Defense Minister: Countering Iran Will Be Lethal and Unexpected

Israel’s Defense Minister warned on Wednesday that Israel will deliver “deadly” and “unexpected” retaliation for the recent missile attacks launched by Iran.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued this warning as the Israeli military is carrying out a large-scale operation to advance into northern Gaza and is also launching ground attacks on Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

On the diplomatic front, on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden held a phone call, the first in seven weeks. A White House spokesperson stated that the call included discussions on how Israel would respond to Iran’s attacks.

The escalating conflict stems from Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Initially, Israel only engaged in warfare with Hamas militants in Gaza, but the conflict has now expanded to Lebanon. Israel has launched a week-long ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, who frequently launch cross-border attacks in support of Hamas, and is considering retaliation for Iran’s missile attack on October 1, preparing for a large-scale assault.

Gallant stated on Wednesday in an address to the Israeli military, “Our strike will be lethal, precise, and most importantly – unexpected. They will not understand what happened, how it happened. They will see the consequences. Whoever attacks us will suffer and pay the price.”

On October 1, Iran fired over 180 missiles at Israel, with most intercepted by Israel with the help of the United States. Biden has expressed that he will not support retaliatory strikes against locations related to Iran’s nuclear program.

Hezbollah continues to launch attacks as well. On Wednesday, the organization claimed responsibility for a rocket attack on the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. According to the town’s acting mayor, the victims were a couple walking their dog.

The situation remains tense as Israel prepares for potential further retaliation against its adversaries in the region following recent escalations in violence.
