Israel Arms Sales Hit Record Amid Controversy in Gaza Conflict

Despite facing criticism for its military actions in Gaza, Israel’s weapon sales have significantly increased and set a new record. The Israeli government announced on Wednesday (June 4th) that defense exports in 2024 reached a new high of $14.7 billion, with a 13% year-on-year increase, maintaining a fourth consecutive year of growth.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz explained that the global recognition of Israeli technology is a major factor contributing to the growth in weapon exports. The recent surge in weapon exports is directly related to the conflicts between Israel and Hamas, Houthi armed forces, and Hezbollah.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in 1,200 deaths and 251 people being abducted. Subsequently, Israel initiated an offensive in Gaza, leading to over 54,000 deaths and residents being displaced multiple times.

The ceasefire agreement brokered by Washington collapsed in March of this year, prompting Israel to block humanitarian aid until mid-May when partial aid was allowed. The UK, France, and Canada jointly criticized Israel’s military expansion and threatened further action if the attacks did not cease.

Spain canceled an anti-tank weapon deal with Israel’s defense company Rafael, while German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Israel’s actions would be reviewed for compliance with international humanitarian law. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounced Israel’s actions as “shocking.”

Missiles and anti-air defense systems make up nearly half of Israel’s defense exports, with the “Iron Dome” system being highly praised. Among the countries receiving Israeli weapons exports, European nations accounted for the largest share at 54% in 2024, a significant increase from 35% in 2023.
