Taiwanese artist Xie Yilin recently revealed on a variety show in mainland China that actress Yang Mi often shares photos and daily life updates of their daughter “Xiao Nuomi” with her. The two frequently exchange thoughts on parenting topics. Xie Yilin joked that she initially didn’t understand the trend of “showing off kids,” but was charmed by the cuteness of “Xiao Nuomi.” Now that she is a mother of two herself, she has also gradually turned into a “kids-showing-off maniac.”
Xie Yilin, who rose to fame through the Taiwanese variety show “Have You Ever Been to College,” formed a deep friendship with Yang Mi after collaborating on the movie “Tiny Times” in 2013. Amid Yang Mi’s divorce from Hong Kong actor Hawick Lau in 2018, Hawick Lau’s father Liu Dan has repeatedly responded with “don’t know” or “haven’t seen” about Yang Mi’s visits to their daughter in interviews, leading people to speculate that Yang Mi was neglecting her motherly duties.
However, on the episode of the Chinese variety show “Mao Xuewang Spring Day 2025” aired on June 2, Xie Yilin inadvertently revealed that the usually lively and energetic Yang Mi has been gushing about her daughter “Xiao Nuomi” with her close friends daily since becoming a mother, showing off photos of her on her phone. That uncontainable joy is just how an ordinary mother behaves.
Yang Mi got married and had a child at the peak of her career. Xie Yilin disclosed that Yang Mi conceived “Xiao Nuomi” during the filming of “Tiny Times,” teasing her for shooting a dancing scene in high school with a big belly, unable to even fit into a pleated skirt. From four to eight months pregnant, Yang Mi continued filming on set, running around and performing stunts, even engaging in fight scenes, which amazed Xie Yilin. Yang Mi said it was not about money, but once she promises something, she follows through. This determination laid the groundwork for later criticisms of her as being “neglectful” or “not prioritizing her family.”
Earlier reports suggested that Yang Mi never shared her daughter online, but Xie Yilin’s words on the show unveiled the truth. In reality, Yang Mi and “Xiao Nuomi” have a great relationship. In one instance on the show, Yang Mi had a sweet phone call with her daughter where “Xiao Nuomi” put down her book and affectionately said, “Mom, I love you.”
Following her divorce from Hawick Lau, “Xiao Nuomi” has been living in Hong Kong. To outsiders, it may seem that due to her busy work schedule, Yang Mi has limited opportunities to see her daughter. However, Xie Yilin revealed that Yang Mi regularly visits her daughter in private. In April this year, a netizen spotted Yang Mi in Hong Kong’s high-speed rail station while keeping a low profile. Speculations arose that she was visiting her 10-year-old daughter “Xiao Nuomi.” On June 1, Yang Mi’s first interview was to wish her daughter a happy birthday.
Since the birth of “Xiao Nuomi,” Yang Mi has been intent on protecting her daughter. Yang Mi once mentioned in an interview that she visits her child whenever she has free time but doesn’t want to disclose specific timings, let alone expose any aspect of her daughter’s private life. She believes “Xiao Nuomi” is just an ordinary child and does not want her own fame to overshadow or burden her daughter, wishing only for her to grow up healthy and lead a normal life.
