In the midst of recent upheavals on the battlefields between Russia and Ukraine, tensions are also escalating in the East Asian region, particularly between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Japan and the Philippines. Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, has struck a nerve with the CCP, emphasizing that real power lies in reclaiming territories from Russia rather than just focusing on territorial integrity.
Within a week, the CCP dispatched a Yun-9 electronic reconnaissance aircraft and a scientific research vessel to intrude into Japan’s airspace and territorial waters, causing outrage in Japan, who formally protested against China’s aggressive actions. This blatant disregard for Japan’s warnings and intrusion into its territories seems to be a tactic to pressure Japan, especially with the upcoming Liberal Democratic Party leadership election at the end of September, aiming to prevent the emergence of a leader opposing the CCP.
Similar to its intimidating tactics in Taiwan’s elections, such actions by the CCP often backfire and could potentially lead to the rise of anti-CCP leadership. Since Shinzo Abe took office at the end of 2012, mainstream political sentiment in Japan has been increasingly anti-CCP. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has further solidified Japan’s defense policies, with defense expenditures exceeding 2% of GDP for the first time.
In the past month, tensions between China and the Philippines over disputed islands have escalated, particularly around Sabina Shoal, also known as Ayungin Shoal, where several clashes have occurred. Despite China’s aggressive maritime surveillance ships and naval militia, the Philippine Coast Guard remains steadfast, insisting on maintaining control of the area. According to reports from the Philippine Navy, as of September 2nd, China has deployed over 200 ships within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, intensifying the already tense situation.
Located between Ren’ai Shoal and Palawan Island, Ayungin Shoal holds strategic importance. If China successfully establishes a base there, it could potentially cut off the Philippines’ supply route to Ren’ai Shoal, forcing them to retreat and achieving a dual purpose for China.
Tsai Ing-wen’s remarks strike at the heart of the CCP’s vulnerability, revealing their lack of emphasis on territorial integrity. Territory has been used as a bargaining chip by the CCP, easily relinquished when deemed necessary, as seen in numerous instances throughout history.
Since the Communist Party took power, it has given away millions of Chinese territories to neighboring countries for various reasons, openly or covertly. This has resulted in China’s territory transitioning from the once lush “camellia leaf” to the present “emaciated chicken.” Betraying territories to gain recognition and legitimacy is a tragic reflection of the Chinese nation under CCP rule.
