Recent major fire in Hong Kong has left over a hundred people dead, causing shock and mourning among the global Hong Kong community. Mr. Charles Lam, representing the Hong Kong Forum in Los Angeles, expressed in an interview that overseas Hong Kong residents are feeling deep sadness and anger, urging the Hong Kong government to address public grievances, thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire, and not simplify or politicize responsibility. The lack of transparency in the fire investigation could potentially impact Hong Kong’s long-term stability.
Overseas Hong Kong residents have been heartbroken upon seeing the scenes of the fire at the Homantin Hillside apartment complex and the affected units through various media outlets. Mr. Lam believes that current public opinion is attempting to place blame solely on the use of “bamboo scaffolding” on construction sites in Hong Kong for over a hundred years. However, based on on-site photos and information, it is apparent that the real accelerant of the fire includes green plastic netting and foam, which are highly flammable. The Hong Kong government should not evade comprehensive testing of construction materials; overseas Hong Kong residents are urging the government to respect civilian rescue efforts and not monopolize donations and information.
Mr. Lam criticized the Hong Kong government for appearing unwilling under Beijing’s pressure to properly investigate the truth, often delaying investigations or denying other possible factors, leading to “great disappointment among Hong Kongers.” According to reports from Hong Kong media, the fire is suspected to be related to workers smoking at the construction site, indicating potential loopholes in Hong Kong’s construction oversight.
The fire at the Homantin Hillside apartment complex in Hong Kong has resulted in at least 150 fatalities, marking a rare major disaster in recent years. Overseas Hong Kong residents around the world have been holding memorial and prayer events. In Los Angeles, a prayer meeting organized by a religious group is scheduled for this Wednesday, December 3rd, to commemorate the victims and their families.
Addressing concerns about the possibility of massive protests erupting again in Hong Kong, Mr. Lam stated that there has been a surge in public discontent after the fire. Students who stepped forward to demand the truth be uncovered were promptly arrested by national security units, reflecting the high pressure the current Hong Kong society is under. He said, “With such strong public discontent, if the government does not address it, long-term stability is not possible.”
Mr. Lam also criticized the Hong Kong government for its inappropriate handling of donated supplies following the fire. After a significant number of citizens voluntarily donated supplies to the fire victims, the government promptly cleared the scene and handed over the supplies to be distributed by officially managed care teams, marginalizing the goodwill of the public. “The government should respect the efforts of the citizens, rather than allowing care teams to take credit,” he said.
The Hong Kong Forum in Los Angeles currently refrains from independently initiating donations from abroad due to its “anti-CCP” stance, fearing that cross-border donations may pose risks. Mr. Lam suggested that individuals overseas directly donate to Hong Kong’s grassroots support groups or the Red Cross.
Additionally, the Hong Kong Forum in Los Angeles will be hosting a cultural event this Saturday, December 6th, inviting two renowned Hong Kong artists who have relocated to the UK, known as “Splashing Ink and Wandering Waves,” to unveil a mural for the “Hong Kong Corner” project at the Liberty Sculpture Park.
These two artists have gained recognition in Hong Kong and continue their artistic endeavors in the UK, exhibiting across Europe. Their transnational collaboration aims to connect overseas Hong Kong residents through art and raise awareness on Hong Kong issues. The maintenance and creation of “Hong Kong Corner” require long-term support and are in urgent need of help. Donations are welcome at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/hongkongcorner.
