Inspecting the Marines, Lai Ching-te: Demonstrating Taiwan’s Determination to Safeguard to the World

President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Lai Ching-te, visited the Marine Corps 66th Brigade this afternoon to encourage the national military forces. In his inaugural address as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he expressed that in the face of external threats, he will continue to promote defense reform, defend the values of freedom and democracy, safeguard regional peace and stability, and demonstrate Taiwan’s determination to protect democracy to the world.

The Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) released a press statement today, indicating that President Lai Ching-te visited the “Marine Corps 66th Brigade” in Taoyuan this afternoon for the first time as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He urged the troops to maintain rigorous training and implement various mission objectives. He mentioned plans to continue defense reform, enhance the overall combat capabilities of the military, ensure better care for the armed forces, and demonstrate the resolve to protect democratic Taiwan to the world.

Upon arrival, President Lai Ching-te received a briefing on the unit’s missions and inspected their combat equipment to understand the readiness and operational status of the forces. He also visited the living facilities and observed the activities of the soldiers’ clubs, distributing commendation money to commend the soldiers for their hard work. In his speech, he stated, “Today, for the first time as the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of China’s Armed Forces, I am here to cheer on my military brothers and sisters. As the Commander-in-Chief, my responsibility is to defend the country and safeguard the lives and property of all our citizens. I stand with my military brothers and sisters to protect national security.”

“At this moment, the international community is highly concerned about democratic Taiwan, and in the face of external challenges and threats, we will continue to defend the values of freedom and democracy, safeguard regional peace and stability. I have confidence in our armed forces and I want to thank each and every military brother and sister for holding their ground, protecting national security, and I ask all fellow citizens to rest assured.” President Lai Ching-te acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the Marine Corps 66th Brigade members, praising their morale and proficiency in training and equipment operations.

“The 66th Brigade carries the missions of mobile deployment in the capital region and safeguarding important targets; not only possessing comprehensive combat capabilities but also rapid response capabilities, playing a crucial role in safeguarding national security. Every member present is a brave and resolute Marine Corps team member, carrying the honor and responsibility. I urge all of you to continue rigorous training and implement various mission objectives,” Lai Ching-te emphasized.

Looking to the future, Lai Ching-te stated, “I will continue to promote defense reform, enhance the overall combat capabilities of the armed forces, and ensure better care for our military brothers and sisters. I firmly believe that by taking care of our armed forces, we are taking care of our country. Let us work together to demonstrate our determination to protect democratic Taiwan to the world.”

Regarding the announcement by the Chinese Communist military today organizing land, sea, air forces, rocket forces, and others in the Eastern Theater Command to conduct the “Joint Sword—2024A” exercise from 7:45 a.m. on the 23rd to the 24th around Taiwan and the surrounding areas, Minister of National Defense Gu Li-hsiung, stated during a media interview that the Defense Ministry has an established emergency response center, of which he went to, and will convene the Executive Yuan meeting later. They will be continuously updated on the latest developments and respond appropriately.
