Indian Thief Leaves Note of Apology, Promises to Return Stolen Items Within a Month

A residential house in Tamil Nadu, India was recently robbed. Surprisingly, the thief left a note of apology after the crime, promising to return the stolen gold and cash within a month.

According to the report by the “Times of India,” the incident took place in Tuticorin, a southern city in Tamil Nadu. The house belonged to Chithirai Selvin, a 79-year-old retired teacher, and his wife.

The couple had gone to Chennai to visit their son on June 17. They had hired a cleaner to regularly clean the house. When the cleaner visited their home on the evening of June 26, she found the door open and immediately alerted the authorities.

Upon investigation, the local police discovered that Selvin and his wife were robbed of 60,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $718), two pairs of gold earrings, and a silver anklet.

What stood out the most was the handwritten apology note left by the thief. The note claimed that the thief’s family member was sick and in urgent need of money, and promised to return the stolen items within a month.

The note, written in Tamil with green ink, read: “Forgive me. I will return within a month. There is sickness in my family.”

Similar incidents of thieves leaving apology notes have occurred in India in the past.

In a previous incident reported by Epoch Times, on February 1, 2023, a group of thieves in Uttar Pradesh attempted to rob a jewelry store by tunneling underground but failed to execute their plan. Perhaps out of guilt, they left a note apologizing to the store owner before leaving.

The store owner, Deepak Kumar, discovered the break-in on the morning of February 2 and immediately contacted the authorities. He also noticed that a statue of a deity in the store had been moved to face the wall.

Kumar remarked, “Perhaps the thieves did not want the deity to witness their crime, so they turned the statue away.”

According to a report by “Xinmin Evening News” in mainland China, a thief in Shanghai recently left a note for the owner but instead of apologizing, mocked the owner for poor security measures.

The thief, a man surnamed Shi, broke into a company’s premises at night and stole cash, bank cards, mobile phones, and other valuable items. He even put on a pair of shoes he found under an employee’s desk. He then opened a safe but found stamps inside that were of no use to him.

However, he came up with a plan and left a note for the company owner using paper and pen from the office. Not only did the note ridicule the company for its poor security, but it also demanded 50,000 RMB in exchange for the stolen stamps and documents.

This note became crucial evidence in his case. He was eventually arrested by the police and faced charges of theft and extortion.

These incidents not only highlight the unusual behavior of thieves but also showcase the diverse ways in which they seek to justify their actions or taunt their victims.
