Increase in “dinner-time burglary” in affluent communities in Southern California

Southern California police have issued a warning to residents living in affluent communities about an increase in home burglaries during dinner time.

The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department along the coast of Los Angeles County reported on Saturday (February 15) on social media that there have been four residential burglaries during the evening hours (dinner time) since the beginning of this year.

According to case records, thieves have been active between 5:30 pm and 8 pm, with police stating that “the burglary process is fast, the thieves act surreptitiously, taking advantage of the cover of night.”

In addition to the four mentioned incidents, there have been four other burglaries occurring at different times in the area: two at the same residence on Via Opata, with suspects already apprehended; one involving a garage theft; and another happening in broad daylight.

Thieves have entered victims’ homes through various means, including damaging garage doors, smashing rear doors and windows, and breaking side windows. In one case, the victim’s back door was left completely unlocked, allowing the thief easy access.

Local police not only released a map of burglary locations but also provided residents with measures to protect their property: setting an alarm and turning on lights when dining out to create the illusion of someone being home; remaining vigilant at all times and observing the surroundings when leaving home for any suspicious individuals or vehicles; and promptly contacting the local police upon seeing any suspicious activity.

Residents are encouraged to take these precautions to prevent falling victim to these home burglaries in the community.
