On the morning of June 18, a Type 094A strategic nuclear submarine of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy surfaced in the Taiwan Strait, and then traveled north through the strait in a floating state under the escort of a warship.
Strategic nuclear submarines are always shrouded in mystery. They are one of the “trinity” of nuclear forces of a nuclear power, always carrying more than a dozen intercontinental ballistic missiles cruising in the deep oceans as a hidden nuclear attack force capable of delivering devastating blows to the enemy, known as the “second nuclear strike”. The five nuclear powers – the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France – all have strategic nuclear submarines in service.
Strategic nuclear submarines need to maintain stealth and generally do not surface easily. They only float through when entering or leaving ports, when the water is too shallow, when malfunctions occur, or to declare harmless passage. Additionally, they will reveal their positions when declaring their nuclear power.
The Type 094 strategic nuclear submarine is currently the only sea-based nuclear force of the Communist Party of China, with approximately 6 vessels. Media within China believe that compared to the United States’ Ohio-class, Russia’s Typhoon-class, the UK’s Vanguard-class, and France’s Triomphant-class, the Type 094 submarine lags significantly behind in various performance aspects, even being inferior to Russia’s Delta IV-class strategic nuclear submarine, which has been in service for over 30 years, placing China as the “worst among the P5”.
The current strategic nuclear submarine of the US military is the Ohio-class, a product of the Cold War era. Some of them have been converted into cruise missile submarines, capable of carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles. The US is currently designing and building a new generation of strategic nuclear submarines, the Columbia-class nuclear submarine, with construction of the first ship beginning in 2020 and expected to enter service in 2031.
The Typhoon-class, designed and built by Russia, is the world’s largest strategic nuclear submarine. Currently, 7 vessels are in service, with plans to build a total of 12.
