Recently, the false identity of Ruan Shaoping as a “Chinese Academy of Sciences academician” was exposed, followed by the revelation of the false identity of Yu Pengxiang as a “State Council counselor” of the CCP, sparking widespread attention to the chaos of false identities. On August 19, the Shenzhen police reported that Ruan Shaoping has been detained for criminal reasons, and Yu Pengxiang has also been arrested.
On August 19, the Nanshan Branch of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau reported that Ruan (male, 63 years old) was suspected of impersonating a retired major general, a CAS academician, and other special identities for illegal profit, and had participated in social activities under false pretenses multiple times. Ruan was criminally detained for the crime of impersonating a military officer and committing fraud, and the case is under further investigation.
In early August, Ruan Shaoping, claiming to be a “Chinese Academy of Sciences academician,” was exposed as a fake. Subsequently, his titles as the political commissar of Leishenshan and Huoshenshan, and the former vice-president of the PLA First Military Medical University (now Southern Medical University) were also proven to be forged.
After the exposure of the incident, attention was drawn to the organizations that had previously published reports about him, including the Guangdong Traditional Culture Promotion Association. Some media reports pointed out that the Guangdong Traditional Culture Promotion Association had endorsed Ruan Shaoping, the fake academician, on several occasions, serving as one of the main platforms for his participation in activities.
In response, Li Shiyu, the president of the Guangdong Traditional Culture Promotion Association, told China News Weekly that he “does not know Ruan Shaoping.” Li Jianhui, the honorary president of the association, said that she met Ruan Shaoping at a seminar two or three years ago and later invited him to participate in events held by her alma mater.
“Someone once told me that they couldn’t find any information about academician Ruan Shaoping on the official website,” Li Jianhui said. “I directly asked Ruan Shaoping why his information couldn’t be found on the official website. At that time, Ruan Shaoping said there was no need to pay attention to them.”
However, a new scandal emerged soon after. Yu Pengxiang, the honorary president of the Guangdong Traditional Culture Promotion Association, was also exposed for impersonating a State Council counselor.
Yu Pengxiang told China News Weekly that “Yu Pengxiang” was not his real name, so it was natural that the official website of the State Council counselor’s office couldn’t find any information about him. Yu Pengxiang stated that he is 91 years old this year, served in the military, and retired with the rank and treatment of a deputy corps. However, Yu Pengxiang did not disclose his real name to the reporters.
Li Shiyu mentioned that he had known Yu Pengxiang for over ten years but was also unaware of Yu Pengxiang’s real name. Li Jianhui also stated that she did not know Yu Pengxiang’s real name.
Subsequently, Li Jianhui provided a photo of a “Letter of Appointment to the Public Policy Research Center of the State Council Counselor’s Office.” She said that it was posted by Yu Pengxiang in the WeChat group of the Guangdong Traditional Culture Promotion Association. The media sought confirmation from a staff member of the State Council Counselor’s Office through relevant channels, and the response confirmed that the document shown in the photo was a fake certificate.
On August 19, the Baiyun Branch of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau reported that Yu Pengxiang (male, 73 years old) is currently under criminal enforcement measures for impersonating a military officer.
