On November 4th, which is the general election day, the New York City education advocacy group PLACE NYC endorsed Democratic candidate Phil Wong for City Council in the 30th District. Wong also recently received an endorsement from retired State Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan in the 37th District.
Former State Assemblywoman Nolan stated, “Community leader Phil Wong achieved a remarkable victory in the primaries. We do not need to agree on every issue, but Phil Wong’s proven track record in local engagement is evident to all. I believe he is deserving of our support and will become a responsible and diligent advocate. His focus on quality of community life, environmental protection, small business development, and educational affairs should earn him the support of all voters in the 30th District, especially Democratic voters. I am pleased to endorse him.”
PLACE NYC commented, “Phil Wong has consistently advocated for and defended the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), expanded Gifted and Talented education programs, and prioritized parent involvement in education policy. PLACE NYC endorsed him during the primaries and now, as the general election approaches, we endorse him again, affirming his leadership in advancing academic excellence.”
Phil Wong currently serves as the Budget and Constituent Director in Councilman Robert Holden’s office and previously chaired the Community Education Council for the 24th District. His Republican opponent in the November 4th general election is Alicia Vaichunas, making it a closely contested race. Both candidates have expressed a commitment to follow in Holden’s footsteps, with the victor planning to retain the services of the defeated candidate, as they consider it a competition of honorable individuals.
