On May 27, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying was appointed as the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to an announcement made by the State Council of the Communist Party of China. Hua Chunying, who has served as the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry since 2012, has been in the position for nearly 12 years. In October 2021, she was promoted to the position of Party Committee Member and Ministerial Assistant of the Foreign Ministry, responsible for news, protocol, and translation.
Hua Chunying’s remarks have sparked controversies multiple times during her tenure as the spokesperson. Her public promotion of the CCP’s policies in Xinjiang, the covering up of human rights violations by the CCP, and the spreading of false claims such as the conspiracy that the United States military laboratory Fort Detrick created the COVID-19 virus (referred to as the Chinese virus by the CCP) have drawn criticism. She once declared on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that after three years of the pandemic, the Chinese (CCP) people are the top priority and life comes first, triggering a wave of criticism.
In 2020, during a routine press conference hosted by Hua Chunying, a journalist inquired about Twitter deleting accounts related to pro-CCP propaganda. Hua Chunying responded by stating that there were “malicious lies against China” on platforms like Twitter, emphasizing the need for “just voices from the Chinese side” to counter this. During her response, Hua Chunying blinked 55 times in 49 seconds. An Epoch Times commentator, Yuan Bin, wrote that due to lying, Hua Chunying’s inner self is lacking in confidence, nervous, and under pressure, which is why she involuntarily blinked 55 times in 49 seconds. Yuan Bin believes that from Hua Chunying’s example, even skilled liars who are habitual deceivers show facial expressions that betray their deceit.
Yuan Bin: Hua Chunying blinked 55 times in 49 seconds when answering journalists.
This recent appointment of Hua Chunying as the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs has reignited discussions regarding her tenure as the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson and the controversies surrounding her statements and actions. Her role as a key figure in the CCP’s communication strategy and international relations has brought both praise and criticism from various quarters, making her a polarizing figure in the global diplomatic landscape.
