How much do you need to earn to be middle class in the United States?

In the United States, whether you are considered middle class may depend on where you live.

According to the latest available data from the 2022 American Community Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, GOBankingRates has determined the income ranges needed to qualify as middle class in all 50 states. The personal finance website defines “middle class” as households with an annual income ranging from two-thirds to double the state’s median household income.

In states like Maryland and New Jersey, the upper end of the middle class income range approaches $200,000. According to data from GOBankingRates, in Maryland, income between $65,641 and $196,922 is considered middle class. In New Jersey, the middle class income range is $64,751 to $194,252.

It’s not surprising that these states have higher qualifying incomes for the middle class. According to Census Bureau data as of 2022, Maryland and New Jersey have the highest median household incomes in the country, at $96,346 and $94,991 respectively.
