Hospital ward ceiling falls in South China’s Nanchong, hitting pregnant woman.

Recently, in a hospital in Nanchong, Sichuan, a pregnant woman was hit by a ceiling frame and plastic board falling in the ward, sparking attention.

On August 7, a netizen posted a video claiming that in the maternity ward of the Jiangdong campus of Nanchong Central Hospital in Sichuan, the ceiling frame and plastic board suddenly fell off, scattered on the hospital bed and floor, hitting a new mother who had just given birth. In the video, family members of the pregnant woman and medical staff are seen clearing the plastic board off the woman.

According to staff in the relevant department of the hospital, the falling off of the ceiling components was caused by loose parts, stating, “The curtains are often pulled, and after a long time, one of the fasteners above became loose and fell off.”

Staff in the hospital’s obstetrics department told the media that the pregnant woman and the baby have been transferred and no one was injured.

The hospital’s response has prompted questioning from netizens: “What does it mean by ‘no one was injured’? How many cells were scared to death, can that be seen?” “Just gave birth and already so weak, getting crushed and scared, how can postpartum recovery be good under such circumstances?”

Some netizens also expressed, “We all spend so much money when we go to the hospital, where is it all going?” “Issues are everywhere.” “This looks like a product after competitive bidding.” “Substandard projects are everywhere, it turns out.”

The incident has drawn public concern over hospital safety standards and the quality of facilities, with many questioning the adequacy of maintenance and construction practices in medical facilities. The hospital’s assurance that no injuries were sustained has been met with skepticism, highlighting the need for more stringent oversight and accountability in healthcare infrastructure.
