Hong Kong Police Officers Lured to Scamming Site in Cambodia During Mainland Visit

A Hong Kong police officer who was on leave in mainland China recently found himself in a scam park in Cambodia and managed to escape before calling for help at his Hong Kong police station. The Hong Kong police have confirmed the incident and have dispatched personnel to Cambodia.

According to reports from mainland and Hong Kong media such as “Southern Daily” and “Hong Kong 01” on August 31st, a male police officer from the Ma On Shan Police Station in Hong Kong had earlier reported to his superiors that his mother was seriously injured in a car accident in Guangxi and he needed to take leave to take care of her. After entering Shenzhen on August 22nd, he did not return to work in Hong Kong but instead traveled from Guangxi to Cambodia.

On August 27th, the Ma On Shan Police Station received multiple phone calls with no caller ID displayed, where a man claiming to be a police officer and able to provide a police identification number stated that he had been taken to a scam park in Cambodia and had managed to escape, currently at a police station in Cambodia seeking rescue.

The report cited sources saying that after being taken to the scam park in Cambodia, people in the park discovered that he was in possession of a Hong Kong police warrant card, leading to them abandoning him at the foot of a mountain. He subsequently fled and sought help by reporting to the authorities.

According to reports, the man’s mother had also sought help by reporting to the police station in Sheung Shui, Hong Kong.

On August 31st, the Commissioner of Police in Hong Kong, Chris Tang, confirmed that a police officer who went on leave to the mainland had gone missing and was deceived into a scam park in Cambodia. Tang mentioned in a press conference that the Hong Kong police officer who was deceived into the scam park in Cambodia is currently safe, and the police would dispatch personnel to Cambodia on August 31st by plane to further understand the situation.
