Hong Kong director Wong Jing recently revealed details about the love life of actor Andy Lau on the YouTube show “Wong Jing Laughs at the Jianghu.” He disclosed that in the past, when Lau and his girlfriend went to watch movies, they had to “time it just right.” They would enter the theater 10 minutes after the movie started, leave quickly 10 minutes before it ended, and Lau would exclaim, “Being Andy Lau’s girlfriend is really tough.”
At the premiere of Andy Lau’s movie “Hunt for Gold · Game” on May 6 in Hong Kong, when asked about Wong Jing’s revelations on his love life, Lau calmly responded, “I don’t mind, everyone knows.”
Lau’s love life has always been a topic of public interest. Wong Jing reminisced on the show that Lau never flaunted his relationships. Even when going to the movies with his girlfriend, they would only enter after 10 minutes of the movie had passed and leave 10 minutes before it ended to avoid being discovered by the media.
Wong Jing sighed, “Being Andy Lau’s girlfriend is really not an easy task, I think Lau is really quite burdened.” He also revealed that when Lau was dating Carol Chu in 1986, they could only meet once every few months. Lau told him that during the Chinese New Year, he would choose to go to remote locations with hardly any people around to quietly spend a week.
Wong Jing also mentioned that besides admitting his fondness for Rosamund Kwan, Lau rarely had any scandals. But once Lau discovered that Rosamund Kwan was dating Chow Yun-fat, he immediately let go of that thought.
Regarding Wong Jing’s claim that Lau and his girlfriend would only enter the theater 10 minutes after the movie started and leave 10 minutes before it ended to avoid being seen, Lau also stated, “Every actor is like that.”
At 63 years old, Lau once jokingly mentioned on a mainland Chinese program “Kai Jiang La” that the only flaw in his life was his secret marriage. However, insider information revealed that Lau’s reason for hiding his love for Carol Chu back then was due to threats from the triads.
Taiwanese veteran film critic Mai Ruoyu once disclosed on Taiwan’s SET News “Challenging News” that after becoming famous, Lau was once forced by the triads at gunpoint to make movies. He later refused to reveal his girlfriend Carol Chu because of threats from the triad who said, “If you don’t film, I know where your girlfriend lives.”
To protect his love, Lau was forced to film a large number of terrible movies and kept his relationship with Carol Chu a secret for nearly 20 years. It wasn’t until Carol Chu’s father passed away in 2009 that Lau was seen attending the funeral in Malaysia as her son-in-law, finally publicly acknowledging their marriage by holding Carol Chu’s hand.
