Hong Kong: 5th Alarm Fire Claims Lives of 37-Year-Old Firefighter with 9 Years of Service

On November 27, 2025, a Level 5 fire broke out at the Grand Fortune Garden in Tai Po, Hong Kong. The incident occurred in the afternoon of the 26th and tragically resulted in the death of a firefighter. The Fire Services Department Commissioner, Yang En-kin, spoke to reporters in the evening close to 7 pm, revealing that the deceased firefighter, surnamed Ho, was 37 years old and had served in the Sha Tin Fire Station for 9 years.

The firefighter arrived at the scene around 3 pm to participate in firefighting operations. After half an hour, he lost contact, and another half hour later, he was found inside the building with facial burns. He was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment, and at 4:45 pm, it was confirmed that he did not survive. Yang En-kin expressed condolences to the family of the deceased firefighter and assured that support would be provided to help them through this difficult time.

Additionally, Yang En-kin disclosed that another firefighter was hospitalized due to heat exhaustion and was currently receiving medical treatment.

As of 2 am on the 27th, according to police reports, the massive fire had already claimed 36 lives, left more than 30 injured, and 209 individuals missing. Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and the casualty figures are continuously being updated.

According to data from Hong Kong’s Centaline Property Agency, the Grand Fortune Garden was built in 1983, making it 42 years old. It is a residential estate under the “Home Ownership Scheme” with a total of 8 blocks and 1,984 units.
