In recent news from Guernsey, the second-largest island in the Channel Islands belonging to the United Kingdom, a peculiar incident occurred involving a group of cows escaping from a farm and seeking shelter at an animal sanctuary. It remains unclear how these cows became aware of the location of the animal sanctuary.
The Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in a press release issued on April 15th, reported that a group of cows broke free from a fenced field on April 14th and made their way straight to the society.
According to the association, large animals often escape farms by getting past fences, especially during windy weather or when gates are left open.
Steve Byrne, the manager of the association, commented, “We are fortunate to have some very intelligent animals in Guernsey. A group of Guernsey cows crossed the fence this weekend and decided to pay a visit to our team on Sunday.”
He added, “It was a very interesting day for our team, but we enjoy the challenge. Soon after, we located the farmer who owns these cows but had accidentally let them escape.”
Byrne mentioned that these cows were not the first runaway animals to end up at the sanctuary. In recent years, a wandering horse found its way into the sanctuary’s parking lot, and even two goats escaped a farm to seek refuge there.
He emphasized that farm-reared large animals and horses are always a cause for concern when they go missing, as they can pose a threat to property, drivers, pedestrians, and themselves.
The society urges people to immediately report escaped animals if spotted. With thousands of wild and other animals in need of assistance under their care, they rely on public support and sponsorship.
The society also has a webpage for reporting lost pets. For those in need, please click
