Henan: Record-breaking temperature of 44.4℃ kills a large number of mosquitoes

【Epoch Times News, July 18, 2025】 In recent days, multiple areas in Henan province have been experiencing prolonged heatwaves, with temperatures in some regions surpassing 44.4°C, leading to discussions among netizens.

On July 17, a Henan netizen posted a picture claiming, “Even with the air conditioning on, I could still hear mosquitoes buzzing. But the next morning, I found the floor covered with mosquito corpses, truly satisfying!” The image showed the floor of the netizen’s home densely packed with mosquito bodies, which was quite shocking.

Many netizens commented, “No wonder I was in Meiyuan, Wuxi yesterday wondering why I wasn’t being bitten by mosquitoes, turns out they were dying from the heat first.” “Finally, the high temperature did something good.” “This is the happiest news I’ve heard this year.”

Data indicates that mosquitoes thrive at temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C. When temperatures exceed 40°C, the physiological activities of mosquitoes are severely affected. If temperatures remain above 45°C for several hours, the proteins inside mosquitoes denature, the enzyme activity is lost, ultimately leading to death.

To demonstrate just how hot it is in Henan, a middle-aged man from Henan also posted a video where he fried an egg on the road surface. In the video, the man stated, “Residents from Anhui and Shandong, stop saying how hot it is there. Let me show you how hot it really is here.”

After speaking, the man cracked an egg onto a skillet placed on the ground, and the egg instantly solidified, “You still think your place is hotter?” he said.

Statistics show that since July 13, Henan has been experiencing the most intense heatwave of the summer so far, with the majority of the province recording temperatures exceeding 37°C. Among them, 131 counties (cities, districts) have reported maximum temperatures reaching or exceeding 40°C.

In this period of high temperatures, the national station in Xingyang recorded a maximum temperature of 41.9°C, while the regional station in Yanshi District reported 44.4°C. As of July, the average temperature in the entire province is 30.8°C, which is 3.8°C higher than the same period in previous years, marking the highest value since 1961.

The Zhengzhou Meteorological Observatory continued to issue an orange high-temperature warning signal at 6 a.m. on July 18: It is expected that during the day, the maximum temperature in the main urban area of Zhengzhou, the airport area, and Shangjie District and its subordinate townships and streets will rise to above 37°C. In the coming three days, heat prevention and cooling measures will remain the focus of the weather in Henan.
