Henan Province Hit by Severe Heavy Rain, Zhengzhou Countryside Devastated

Henan continues to be hit by severe heavy rainfall in several areas. Following the onslaught of heavy rainfall in rural areas of Zhengzhou, the aftermath is chaotic. On July 15, the yellow rainstorm warning was escalated to an emergency signal, indicating that Pingdingshan in the southeast, Nanyang in the northeast, and Luohe in the southeast are among the areas where severe heavy rainfall will rampage.

On July 14, severe rainfall swept through Pingdingshan in the east, Nanyang in the east, Zhumadian in the west, and Luohe among other areas in Henan. Danjiangkou, Laohekou, and Dengzhou have already broken daily rainfall records, with some areas of Nanyang being hit by localized severe heavy rainfall. Monitoring data shows that Wansheng Wadian automatic station in Wancheng recorded 400 millimeters of rainfall in 24 hours, setting a new record for the strongest rainfall in Henan this year.

A verified internet sales manager from Hangzhou Swift Eagle Technology Co., Ltd., known as “Love Life Diary,” filmed the dire situation in a rural area of Dengzhou, Henan after the flooding on the morning of July 15. In the video, he expressed that torrential rain poured down in the area on the 14th. The aftermath of the heavy rain left farmlands destroyed, cement roads washed away and deformed, and electricity poles toppled by the floods.

In fact, from the evening of the 14th until now, heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc in the Nanyang Basin in Henan, not only marking an unprecedented extreme rainfall event in Nanyang, but also the most ferocious rainfall since the super storm on July 20, 2021 in Henan.

The China Meteorological Administration continued to issue a yellow rainstorm warning on July 15 at 6 a.m.: from 8 a.m. on the 15th to 8 a.m. on the 16th, there will be heavy to torrential rain in parts of southwest Shaanxi, western and northern Sichuan Basin, central and eastern regions of Henan, northern Hubei, northern Anhui, northern Jiangsu, southern Shandong, central Inner Mongolia, northern Hebei, and southeastern Hainan Island, with some areas experiencing severe heavy rainfall, and locally, exceptionally severe rainfall. These areas may face short-term intense precipitation, accompanied by severe convective weather like thunderstorms and strong winds.

As of 10:11 on July 15, 46 rainstorm warnings are currently in effect in Henan.

According to monitoring by the Henan Meteorological Administration, from 7 a.m. on July 14 to 7 a.m. on July 15, heavy to torrential rain hit southern parts of Henan, as well as Pingdingshan and Luohe areas, with the eastern and southern parts of Nanyang and Pingdingshan experiencing heavy and severe heavy rainfall respectively, and some parts of southern Nanyang hit by exceptionally severe rainfall. The average precipitation in cities: 75.0 mm in Nanyang, 38.8 mm in Luohe, and 38.6 mm in Pingdingshan. The top three rainfall stations were as follows: Wadian in Nanyang recorded 408.0 mm, Luying in Nanyang had 373.5 mm, and Jinhua in Nanyang saw 362.0 mm. The highest hourly rainfall was 102.9 mm in Wadian, Nanyang from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. on July 15.
