The influential Hayao Miyazaki, a master of Japanese animation, has been named one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People of 2024 in the category of “Icons.” Miyazaki is hailed as “the most influential director in the history of animation.”
The list of the Top 100 Most Influential People of 2024 includes six categories: “Artists,” “Icons,” “Titans,” “Leaders,” “Innovators,” and “Pioneers.” Miyazaki made it to the “Icons” list.
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro described Miyazaki as a unique creator, stating that “his art fully expresses his personality. He is one of the most influential animation directors in history and one of my top ten favorite storytellers.”
At the age of 83, Miyazaki, along with fellow animator Isao Takahata, co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, an internationally acclaimed animation studio. Many of Miyazaki’s iconic works such as “Castle in the Sky,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “Spirited Away” were produced by Studio Ghibli. Despite announcing his retirement multiple times, with the seventh declaration in September 2013, he ultimately changed his mind.
After returning to work in 2016, Miyazaki delved into the production of “The Boy and the Heron.” The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Oscars. This marked Miyazaki’s second time receiving this award, following his win for “Spirited Away” in 2002.
Regarding Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” Guillermo del Toro praised it in his writings, stating, “Miyazaki’s work sparks a beauty that is impossible to find in the real world, only within his films. At the same time, he holds a realistic attitude towards greed, war, and human anger, understanding how humans shape and destroy this planet, being both the world’s hope and its destroyers.”
Additionally, several entertainment stars, including British singer Dua Lipa, British-Indian actor Dev Patel known for “Slumdog Millionaire,” American singer 21 Savage, Australian singer Kylie Minogue, American singer Fantasia Barrino, and American actor Leslie Odom Jr., also made it to the list.
