Guizhou River Shows Large Amount of White Foam, Environmental Protection Bureau Deemed Harmless but Criticized

Following the pollution incident in the Chu River in Anhui, white foam has been continuously appearing in the river in Luokun Town, Luokun Town, Guizhou Province, Qiannan Prefecture. The local environmental protection bureau stated that no harmful substances have been found and the river has not been affected.

On May 30th, netizens revealed that after a heavy rainfall in Luokun Town, Luokun County, Qiannan Prefecture, Guizhou Province, a large amount of continuous white foam appeared in the river.

A video circulated online shows that in the long river lined with residential buildings on both sides, white foam floats continuously. The white foam does not dissolve in the water but accumulates, creating a white blanket flowing downstream. People on both sides of the river and on bridges crossing the river can be seen observing the scene in the river.

Hubei Economic TV reported on the “Live Broadcast” program that a staff member of the environmental protection bureau in Luodian County, Guizhou, stated that when they arrived at the scene in the afternoon of the 30th, the white foam had disappeared. Local residents informed them that the white foam had persisted for more than ten minutes, and there was no odor at the scene.

The staff member mentioned that several rapid tests were conducted at the scene, and no harmful substances were found, indicating that the foam had no impact on the river. Upon inspecting the upstream of the river, no factories or companies were found, suggesting that the foam may have been generated from washing activities.

Netizens criticized the environmental protection bureau, accusing them of being perfunctory. Some netizens joked, “Is this about Maotai again?” and “If not Maotai, then maybe beer?”

The mockery related to “Maotai” by netizens is derived from a recent statement by an official in Anhui.

Recently, there was a massive fish die-off in the section of the Chuhu River in Nanjing Pukou, a tributary of the Yangtze River, due to the leakage of hazardous chemicals from a company in Quanjiao County, Anhui. However, the head of the Ecological Environment Division of Quanjiao County, Dou Ping, claimed it was unnecessary to test the water quality of the Chuhu River. He even remarked, “Drinking Maotai can also kill people. Should we conduct a toxicological analysis of Maotai?” Under public pressure, several local officials were dismissed.
