Guatemalan Speaker of the Congress Leads Delegation to Visit Taiwan, Will Meet with Lai Ching-te

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that the Speaker of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, Mr. Ramos, led a delegation to visit Taiwan on the 15th. President Lai Ching-te will personally meet with them and engage in discussions on mutual concerns between the two countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) issued a press release stating, “Speaker of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, Mr. Nery Abilio Ramos y Ramos, accepted the invitation from the government of the Republic of China and led a delegation to visit Taiwan from July 15 to 19. The delegation members include the Vice Speaker of the Guatemalan Congress, Mr. César Amézquita, the First Secretary Ms. Karina Paz, the Leader of the ruling National Convergence Front party, Mr. José Sanabria, and bipartisan members of the Congress along with the Director of the Congressional Protocol Office, Mr. Víctor Alburez, Taiwan extends a sincere welcome.”

This visit marks Speaker Ramos’ first official visit since taking office in January of this year. The three accompanying parliamentarians belong to different political parties, showcasing the unwavering support for Taiwan from the Guatemalan Congress across party lines. President Lai Ching-te will personally meet with the delegation to engage in discussions on mutual concerns between the two countries, underscoring the importance Taiwan places on Speaker Ramos’ visit.

During his stay in Taiwan, Speaker Ramos will also attend a banquet hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu and visit the Legislative Yuan, Ministry of Health and Welfare, National Immigration Agency under the Ministry of the Interior, and the International Cooperation and Development Fund. Additionally, he will tour the Taipei City Police Department’s Command Center, Taipei 101, experience the Taipei Metro, and visit the Southern Science Park in Tainan, exploring economic, cultural, and technological facilities.

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Guatemala have been friendly and steadfast. The Guatemalan government and Congress actively support Taiwan’s international participation. Speaker Ramos, on behalf of the Guatemalan Congress, signed a resolution in May endorsing Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA). Both countries have a longstanding and fruitful cooperation in public health, infrastructure, higher education, and agricultural technology exchanges, earning recognition and gratitude from the government, Congress, and people of Guatemala.
