Guangzhou flights delayed by heavy rain

Due to the influence of rainfall, more than a hundred flights at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport were delayed for over an hour today (April 20th). The airport has activated an orange emergency response.

According to staff at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, there are 105 domestic flights that have been delayed for over an hour and have not taken off yet.

The widespread flight delays at the airport have escalated the emergency response level to orange.

Staff members are reminding stranded passengers to check the flight status in advance before traveling, pay attention to weather changes, and closely monitor any flight updates.

Affected by rainy weather, on April 19th, Baiyun Airport had already activated a widespread flight delay red response.

As delayed flights gradually departed that evening, around 2 a.m. on the 20th, the airport began to reduce and cancel the delay response. However, due to weather conditions today, it was reactivated and upgraded to an orange response.

On April 20th, Guangzhou also initiated a Level IV emergency response for heavy rain and flooding.

According to the weather department in Guangzhou, influenced by a strong precipitation cloud system from the northwest, around 1 p.m. on the 20th, Yuexiu District and Tianhe District in Guangzhou are expected to experience heavy rain with accumulated rainfall of 40 to 60 millimeters, accompanied by gusts of about 8 on the Beaufort scale and intense thunderstorms.

Starting from 10:19 a.m. that day, yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms with strong winds took effect in Yuexiu District and Tianhe District of Guangzhou.

Additionally, as of 10:30 a.m., yellow warnings for heavy rain were in effect for Yuexiu, Tianhe, Huadu districts, and yellow warnings for thunderstorms with strong winds were in effect for Yuexiu, Tianhe, Huadu, and Conghua districts.

Guangzhou’s Comprehensive Headquarters for Flood Control, Drought Relief, and Typhoon Prevention initiated a Level IV emergency response for heavy rain and flooding starting from 10:45 a.m. on the 20th.

They also emphasized the importance of disaster prevention measures for urban and rural flooding, flash floods, small watershed floods, landslides, and other hazards.

Apart from Guangzhou, the China Meteorological Administration issued orange alerts for heavy rain, yellow alerts for severe convective weather, and blue alerts for strong winds at 6 a.m. on the 20th.

The orange alert for heavy rain predicts that from 8 a.m. on the 20th to 8 a.m. on the 21st, there will be heavy to torrential rains in southern Guizhou, southern Jiangnan, most of South China, and central Chongqing. Some areas in southern Hunan, southern Jiangxi, southwestern Fujian, eastern Guangxi, and Guangdong may experience heavy rain, with localized areas in Guangdong facing severe rainfall, along with thunderstorms and strong convective weather.

Yellow alerts for severe convective weather indicate that from 8 a.m. on the 20th to 8 a.m. on the 21st, southern Hunan, central-southern Jiangxi, southern Fujian, southwestern Guizhou, southeastern Yunnan, central-eastern Guangxi, and Guangdong may experience severe thunderstorms with wind speeds of Level 8-10 or hail conditions. Some areas might even face wind speeds above Level 10, with local winds reaching above Level 11.

Blue alerts for strong winds predict that from 8 a.m. on the 20th to 8 a.m. on the 21st, certain areas in eastern Xinjiang, western Gansu, northern Inner Mongolia, as well as the southeastern Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea, may experience winds of Level 5-6, with gusts reaching Level 7-8, and the southeastern Yellow Sea and northern East China Sea may experience winds of Level 7-8, with gusts reaching Level 9.
