A 34-year-old woman in Guangdong, China, underwent minimally invasive surgery at a hospital in Foshan, but was diagnosed with brain death due to complications and passed away a few days later. The Foshan Medical Association stated that it did not constitute a medical accident. However, after the woman’s family continued to pursue justice, the Guangdong Provincial Medical Association determined that the hospital involved in the surgery had engaged in multiple improper actions, constituting a top-level medical accident.
According to mainland media reports on September 4th, Mr. Lu from Foshan introduced that on October 29, 2024, his wife underwent a “hysteroscopic uterine fibroid resection” surgery at Foshan First People’s Hospital. She developed water intoxication complications post-surgery, lost autonomous breathing, and dilated pupils, eventually being diagnosed with “brain death” and passed away a few days later.
Mr. Lu said, “Such a small surgery and it cost my wife her life, where is the justice in that? This is the best Grade Three hospital in Foshan, and they still don’t admit it was a medical accident.”
Mr. Lu also revealed that during the surgery, “for over 40 minutes, the anesthesiologist came out multiple times, leaving for 23 minutes at one point.”
The Foshan Health Bureau responded by stating that the hospital bears the main responsibility for the accident, and has issued a warning to the hospital along with a fine of 20,000 yuan. Currently, administrative penalties against the medical staff involved are under process.
The family expressed dissatisfaction with the mere 20,000 yuan fine and believed that the relevant medical staff should be referred to judicial authorities for criminal liability.
Multiple cases of minimally invasive surgeries in mainland China leading to brain death have occurred.
On June 27, a 3-year-old boy in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, underwent tonsil minimally invasive surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical University. Although doctors claimed the surgery went smoothly, the boy remained in a coma after the operation and was declared “brain dead” 10 days later. The family questioned whether there were surgical errors.
In March of this year, a 22-year-old woman in Shantou, Guangzhou, underwent fallopian tube minimally invasive surgery at the Second Hospital of Guangdong Province. Due to negligence by the intensive care doctor, she suffered severe hypoxia in the recovery room and was also diagnosed with “brain death.”
