Recently, a woman in Guangzhou was caught driving under the influence of alcohol but arrogantly claimed that she was a delegate to the National People’s Congress and therefore allowed to drink. This scene was captured by a witness and posted online, sparking public attention.
According to the witness who posted a video on June 19th, on the night of the 18th around 11 pm while passing through Chebei Road in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, they encountered traffic police conducting a DUI checkpoint. A woman, upon seeing police ahead, parked her car on the side of the road, got out, and called for a designated driver. However, she was discovered by the police when the designated driver arrived.
The video shows the woman surrounded by multiple police officers, shouting, “A delegate to the National People’s Congress can drink alcohol!” A police officer retorted, “You can drink, but you cannot drive (after drinking)!” However, the woman continued to insist that she could.
The witness told Upstream News that the woman kept shouting that she was a delegate to the National People’s Congress and was uncooperative during the breath alcohol test. “In the end, after blowing into the breathalyzer, her blood alcohol content was measured at 220mg/100ml, exceeding the DUI standard. The entire process lasted for almost half an hour before she was escorted into a police car, and her vehicle was towed away.”
The video sparked heated discussions online. “Can a delegate to the National People’s Congress disregard the law? Can they act lawlessly?” “The main point is not about drinking, but about driving under the influence.” “It seems like she is accustomed to being arrogant and overbearing.” “Strictly investigate her husband, family members, and parents!” “She was just exposed; how many others have not been exposed yet?”
Amid public scrutiny, on the afternoon of June 20th, the Standing Committee of the Tianhe District People’s Congress in Guangzhou issued a statement in response, stating that Wang Li, a delegate to the tenth session of the Tianhe District People’s Congress, was ordered to resign from her position as a delegate due to suspected legal violations.
