Guangdong hit by heavy rainfall, over 270 towns affected, maximum rainfall of 171mm

Recent days, Guangdong has been hit by heavy rain, resulting in flash floods. Some internet users have exclaimed that they woke up to find the area completely flooded.

According to reports from China News Service and Southern Daily, starting from June 2nd, Guangdong has been experiencing a new round of heavy rainfall, with 277 towns and streets in the province being attacked by heavy and severe rain.

As of 7:41 am on the 3rd, in the central part of Guangdong, Longmen County, Boluo County, Sihui City, Deqing County, Dongyuan County, Yunan County, Duanzhou District, Dinghu District, and Gaoyao District have issued red warnings for heavy rain. At the same time, there are 16 orange warnings and 19 yellow warnings for heavy rain across the province.

Internet users have reported, “The rainfall in Guangzhou on the night of the 2nd was really heavy.” “Waking up to find the area flooded.” “The eastern part of Guangdong wanted rain but didn’t get any, it all went to Guangzhou.”

A viral video shows roads in Guangzhou completely submerged, with many vehicles immersed in water, and in some places, the water reaching thigh level. A driver described the situation as, “It’s like sailing a ship, dealing with one small wave after another… and there’s a car over here that’s completely ruined.”

In the video, an out-of-town internet user expressed, “When I arrived, everything was fine, but now there’s no way back.” The video also shows residences flooded, with household items floating in the water.

According to meteorological monitoring data, from 8 am on the 2nd to 8 am on the 3rd, 78 towns and streets in Guangdong recorded over 100 mm of severe rainfall, 199 towns and streets recorded between 50 mm and 100 mm of heavy rain, and 252 towns and streets recorded between 25 mm and 50 mm of rain. Longhua Town in Longmen County, Huizhou, recorded the highest rainfall in the province at 171.4 mm, while Paitan Town in Zengcheng District, Guangzhou, recorded a rainfall of 166.1 mm. Liantang Town in Gaoyao District, Zhaoqing, recorded the highest hourly rainfall of 107.1 mm in the province.

As a result, nurseries, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and vocational schools in Duanzhou District, Dinghu District, Gaoyao District, and Sihui City in Zhaoqing have suspended classes. All schools in Boluo County, Huizhou, are also closed.

According to the Guangdong Meteorological Observatory, on the 3rd, the central and southern parts of the Pearl River Delta, eastern Guangdong River Source, and Meizhou will still experience heavy to severe rain, with localized heavy rain. Thunderstorms with wind speeds of around level 8 are expected. The rainfall is expected to weaken starting on the 4th.
