Google Mistakenly Deletes Retirement Fund Cloud Data, 600,000 People Unable to Access Accounts

More than 600,000 users of the retirement fund UniSuper have been unable to access their retirement accounts for a week because Google mistakenly deleted the fund’s cloud data, causing backup data to also be deleted in sync.

UniSuper typically backs up data in two different locations to ensure that if one server has an issue, data can be restored from the backup on another server. However, this time both sets of data in different locations were deleted by Google.

Fortunately, UniSuper also had backup data with another service provider, allowing the gradual recovery of the deleted data and minimizing data loss, but the data recovery process will take time.

On May 8, the CEO of UniSuper and the CEO of Google Cloud Services issued a joint apology statement.

The statement mentioned that Google had never experienced such accidental deletion incidents before, attributing it to a misconfiguration error that led to the deletion of UniSuper’s cloud data. Google has taken measures to prevent such incidents from happening again. The incident was not a result of a hacking attack, and customer data was not compromised.

UniSuper’s services began to restore on May 9, with investment account balances reflecting data from the previous week. UniSuper assured that updates will be made promptly.

UniSuper serves 620,000 users and manages $125 billion Australian dollars in funds.
