G7 Group Statement Supports Inclusive Political Transition in Syria

On December 12, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations issued a statement, fully supporting an inclusive political transition in Syria and inviting all parties to uphold the country’s territorial integrity.

In a statement released from the office of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, the leaders of the G7 expressed their readiness to support a transition towards a credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian government, ensuring respect for the rule of law, universal human rights including women’s rights, and protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minority groups.

The statement stated, “The G7 will cooperate with a future Syrian government that adheres to these standards and actively supports it.”

The leaders also called on all parties to “maintain Syria’s territorial integrity and national unity, respecting its independence and sovereignty.”

They emphasized that accountability must be pursued for the Assad government’s actions after 24 years of authoritarian rule.

They stated that they will collaborate with groups dedicated to prohibiting chemical weapons to “ensure the declaration and destruction” of Syria’s remaining chemical arsenal.

Italy currently holds the rotating presidency of the G7, whose members include the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States.
