From Fencing Champion to Internet Celebrity: Qin Xue – “I Just Want to Make Money to Support My Child”

In recent days, the transition of 29-year-old former Chinese national fencer Qin Xue into a social media influencer has sparked discussions and debates. Qin Xue, a former international level fencer, has been posting multiple videos on her short video account “Cod Doesn’t Eat Rice” showcasing her figure in summer outfits. When asked during a live stream, Qin Xue responded, saying “I don’t want fame, I just want to earn some money to support my child.”

Born in 1995, Qin Xue joined the Shandong Province fencing team in 2008. In 2014, she achieved third place in the women’s individual sabre event at the Asian Fencing Championships, and also won the women’s sabre team event with the Chinese team.

Qin Xue’s short video account “Cod Doesn’t Eat Rice” currently has over 1.47 million followers. The featured videos include pictures with her 3-year-old daughter, the origin of her nickname, and scenes from fencing competitions. She mentioned that the reason behind her username is that she is allergic to rice.

According to a report by “Jinyun News,” the account’s details page shows that Qin Xue is currently a sports teacher at a university after divorce, with a contract with the agency “Wuyou Media.” Regarding her transition from a retired athlete to a social media influencer, some netizens praised the positive and healthy content of her videos, while others questioned the style as being on the “edgy” side.

In response to the controversy surrounding her, Qin Xue stated during a live stream, “I don’t seek fame, I just want to earn some money. I have a three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and I want to earn money to support her.”

Former gymnastics champion Wu Liufang has also faced controversies for her “edgy” content, leading to her social media accounts being restricted from following.

Previously reported incidents indicated that after Wu Liufang’s social media was restricted, she deleted 50 videos, gained 2.5 million new followers in two days and caused discontent with her signing company. It seems the main reason her account was restricted was due to rapidly increasing followers.

On November 26th, former gymnast Liu Xuan celebrated retired gymnast Shang Chunsong’s gold medal in “Parkour.” Liu Xuan remarked, “This is the spirit of sports and the correct values that athletes seek after retirement.” Her remarks stirred controversy among netizens, with some interpreting it as a reference to Wu Liufang’s controversial content. Liu Xuan responded to these accusations by saying, “I express my admiration for those whom I approve of. What does it have to do with you?” The online atmosphere remains tense.

This year, the Chinese Communist Party has sacrificed the economy to maintain political power, resulting in the exodus of foreign investments and entrepreneurs, wealthy citizens emigrating, taking knowledge and wealth with them. Bankruptcy, unemployment, insular living, and wage cuts have become common. The era of China’s high economic growth is fading, the economic pie shrinking, and all aspects of Chinese society are experiencing degradation on a national scale, with pervasive frustrations and widespread despair.
