Frequent Earthquakes: Qinghai Zado County 4.6 Magnitude, Tibet Angren County 3.6 Magnitude

Throughout this year, Mainland China has experienced frequent earthquakes. This morning at 8 o’clock on April 21st, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck Bira County in Nagqu City, Tibet. At 9 o’clock, another 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit Zaduo County in Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province.

According to the China Earthquake Network Center, at 9:07 a.m. on April 21st, the 4.6-magnitude earthquake in Zaduo County, Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province had a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 32.56 degrees north latitude, 93.46 degrees east longitude, with an average altitude of about 5199 meters within a 5-kilometer radius. The villages within 20 kilometers include Solagangma Village and Serlaoma Village, while the town within 20 kilometers is Chadang Township.

In addition, the epicenter is 81 kilometers from Zog County in Tibet, 91 kilometers from Baqing County in Tibet, 120 kilometers from Neyang County in Tibet, 122 kilometers from Bira County in Tibet, 170 kilometers from Anduo County in Tibet, 179 kilometers from Nagqu City in Tibet, and 394 kilometers from Lhasa City. Currently, there have been no reports of casualties.

According to the China Earthquake Network Center’s rapid reporting catalog, there have been a total of 77 earthquakes above magnitude 3 in the past five years within a 200-kilometer radius of the epicenter. The largest earthquake was a 6.1-magnitude quake that occurred in Bira County, Nagqu City, Tibet on March 19, 2021, which was 97 kilometers away from the epicenter of this recent quake.

Prior to this, at 8:03 a.m. on April 21st, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck Angren County in Shigatse City, Tibet, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 29.27 degrees north latitude, 86.99 degrees east longitude.

According to the China Earthquake Network Center’s rapid reporting catalog, the largest earthquake in the vicinity of this recent epicenter in the past five years was a 6.8-magnitude quake that occurred in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet on January 7, 2025, which was 97 kilometers away from the epicenter. This earthquake stands as the most significant seismic event in the vicinity in the past five years.
