Frequent Earthquakes: 3.7-Magnitude Tremor Hits Tangshan, Beijing and Surrounding Areas Feel Tremors

After a 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit last month, another earthquake occurred in Tangshan on the afternoon of April 8th, causing residents in Beijing, Qinhuangdao, Chengde, and other areas to feel the tremors.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, at 4:19 pm on April 8th, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck Qian’an City, Tangshan, Hebei Province (39.99 degrees north latitude, 118.86 degrees east longitude), with a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was 11 kilometers from Lulong County, 14 kilometers from Qian’an City, 31 kilometers from Luanzhou City, 35 kilometers from Funing District, 43 kilometers from Changli County, 57 kilometers from Qinhuangdao City, and 174 kilometers from Tianjin.

According to the quick report catalog of the China Earthquake Networks Center, within 200 kilometers of the epicenter, there have been a total of 13 earthquakes measuring above 3.0 magnitude in the past five years. The largest was a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Guye District, Tangshan City, Hebei Province on July 12, 2020, 43 kilometers away from this earthquake’s epicenter.

Netizens reported strong tremors, with comments like “I felt the building swaying and shaking,” “I was taking an exam at the time, it was really scary. Tangshan has experienced frequent seismic activities recently. On March 28th, Guye District in Tangshan registered a 2.5 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 11 kilometers. On March 4th, another earthquake of 3.0 magnitude struck Guye District, also with a depth of 11 kilometers.
