On January 12th and 13th, the lowest temperature in Guangdong dropped below 0°C for two consecutive days. On the morning of January 13th, frost was seen in areas like Tianhe, Huangpu, Conghua, and Zengcheng in Guangzhou. In addition to the cold weather, Guangdong has experienced little rainfall since December last year, leading to an unusually dry climate.
Known as the “warm home,” Guangzhou has been breaking temperature records these past two days. On the 12th, the Guangzhou National Basic Meteorological Station recorded the lowest temperature since 2025 at 3.3°C. In Lutian Town, Conghua, the lowest temperature in the city was recorded at -3.1°C, with frost appearing in the northern mountainous areas. Some early risers captured images of frosted vegetables and frozen water buckets.
On the morning of the 13th, the Guangzhou National Station recorded a temperature of 3.0°C, breaking the previous day’s record low. The Dongsheng Meteorological Observatory in Lutian, Conghua, recorded a temperature of -1.2°C, marking two consecutive days of temperatures below 0°C. Frost was also reported in Tianhe, Huangpu, Conghua, Zengcheng, and other areas. According to forecasts, cold air will impact the province again on the 15th, with even lower temperatures expected around the 17th morning.
Many local netizens commented on the significant temperature differences, saying, “The temperature difference is huge, from just a few degrees in the morning to over twenty degrees at noon.” Some expressed surprise at being awakened by freezing temperatures in Guangzhou for the first time.
In addition to the cold, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and other provinces have also been experiencing historically unprecedented dry weather recently. Guangdong, in particular, typically known for its humid climate as a coastal province, is unusually dry this year, with multiple weather records being broken.
According to China Weather Net, since December last year, many southern regions have seen little to no rainfall, leading to historically dry conditions in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Fujian, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Tibet, and other provinces. The average relative humidity in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Hubei is at historically low levels for this time of year.
The Guangdong Emergency Management Department reported that as of 9:24 a.m. on December 27th, there were 103 forest fire red alert signals across the province. Currently, a red alert for forest fire danger is in effect in Zhuhai, Guangdong.
Many netizens lightheartedly remarked, “It’s almost turning into dried meat,” and “People in Guangdong are dehydrating into dried sweet potatoes.”
According to the Guangdong Meteorological Department, around January 14th, there will be some light rain in the Guangxi-Guangdong area, providing limited relief but aiding in moistening the dry conditions. However, starting on the 15th as dry northerly winds move southward, the weather is expected to become dry again.
