Four Injured as Roof Collapses at a Hotel in Donghai County, Jiangsu

On the morning of October 2nd, during a banquet at a hotel in Donghai County, Jiangsu Province, part of the roof collapsed, resulting in 4 injuries.

Video footage from October 2nd shows a collapse on the exterior of a hotel in Donghai County, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, with firefighting and rescue vehicles present at the scene.

According to Red Star News, hotel staff stated that at the time of the incident, there were four households hosting banquets, with one of them being less affected.

After the incident, the ground was flooded, and at around 11:30 am when the cold dishes were served, the collapse occurred. “The columns, shelves, and decorations on the roof of the third floor all collapsed. Our staff went inside to rescue people, some were injured, and the police arrived.”

According to online reviews, Mingjia Kitchen (Donghai Branch) is located on the 2nd floor of the integrated building of Shimao Plaza Hotel at No. 88 Fuhua West Road, Donghai County. The official social media account indicates that the business license is held by Lianyungang Gengchu Catering Management Co., Ltd., established on March 15, 2019. It holds a food operation permit and operates as a large-scale dining establishment.

On the afternoon of the same day, the Emergency Management Bureau of Donghai County reported that around 11 am, a partial collapse occurred on the roof of the third floor of Mingjia Kitchen Hotel at No. 88 Fuhua West Road, Niushan Street, Donghai County. By around 1 pm, all 4 trapped injured individuals had been rescued and sent to the hospital. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

In response to this incident, astrology and divination blogger “Shi Xiaoxuan” analyzed in a blog post, “It is said that the roof collapsed during a wedding banquet. It is truly an unforeseen disaster. If the injuries are minor, it’s not a big deal, but on such a joyous occasion, will the newlyweds’ marriage be affected in the future? This was definitely not an auspicious date. Ps: Yesterday and today are both inauspicious dates according to Chinese astrology, so all matters should be handled with caution.”

Some netizens expressed their views, stating, “This is not an accident but rather a concentrated outbreak of existing hazards. From the case of the Suzhou hotel where 17 people died due to unauthorized demolition of load-bearing walls, to the Quanzhou hotel collapse that claimed 29 lives due to illegal construction, such tragedies are always linked to ‘unauthorized modifications’ and ‘approval deficiencies.’ Hotels prioritize profit by converting rooms, cutting costs, and skimping on reinforcement, while regulatory inspections become more of a formality, treating load-bearing structures like ‘building blocks.’ It’s fortunate that this incident did not result in a major disaster, but every ‘partial collapse’ serves as a warning: there is no room for luck in building safety.”

“Hotels should undergo regular inspections. Additionally, have these hotels been inspected for any unauthorized interior modifications, or have they not been inspected for a long time?” “The accident has exposed loopholes in building safety management. We hope that relevant departments thoroughly investigate the cause, strengthen hazard inspections, prevent similar tragedies from reoccurring, and ensure the safety of the people.”

Overall, this incident highlights the importance of rigorous building safety measures and vigilant inspections to prevent future accidents and protect the lives of the public.
