After a year and a half of falling from grace, Dai Daojin, former deputy Party secretary and vice chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. Dai Daojin was once the Vice Governor of Hunan Province before stepping down in 2021.
On June 24, the Intermediate People’s Court of Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, publicly announced the verdict of Dai Daojin’s bribery and corruption case. Dai Daojin was convicted of bribery and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, deprived of political rights for life, and had all of his personal assets confiscated.
According to the court, from 2000 to 2024, Dai Daojin took advantage of his positions as Vice Mayor, Mayor, and Party Secretary of the Chengzhou City in Hunan Province, as well as Deputy Secretary-General, Director of the General Office, Secretary-General, Vice Governor of the Hunan Provincial Government, and Vice Secretary and Vice Chairman of the CPPCC in Hunan Province to provide assistance to relevant units and individuals in enterprise operation, project contracting, job adjustments, and promotions, illegally accepting a total of more than 107 million yuan in cash and assets.
From the second half of 2021 to 2023, after retiring, Dai Daojin used his previous positions as Vice Governor of Hunan Province and Vice Chairman of the CPPCC in Hunan Province to unlawfully benefit others through irregular practices related to project contracting and engineering settlement, accepting over 3.66 million yuan in cash and assets directly or through his relatives.
On January 26, 2024, Dai Daojin was officially investigated; by the end of July, he was expelled from the Party and referred to judicial authorities; in early November, he was indicted; on March 26 this year, the first instance trial began.
Public records show that Dai Daojin, born in February 1957 in Hanshou, Hunan Province, worked in Hunan for a long time. He formerly worked in the Organization Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, serving as Deputy Director and later Director of the Office of the Party Organization Department. In 2000, he became a member of the Standing Committee of the Chengzhou City Committee and Secretary of the Zixing City Committee, then Vice Mayor of Chengzhou City in 2002, Mayor in 2004, Party Secretary in 2008, Deputy Secretary-General and Director of the General Office of the Hunan Provincial Government in 2011, and subsequently held other positions.
In 2014, Dai Daojin was appointed Vice Governor of Hunan Province, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC in Hunan Province in 2017, and stepped down in 2021.
