Former Deputy Director of Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress Li Wenrong Expelled from Party and Sent to Judiciary

In recent days, Li Wenrong, a former member of the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee and deputy director, has been expelled from the party and dismissed from his public office, and has been transferred to the judicial authorities for investigation. Li Wenrong was placed under investigation in March of this year while in office.

According to a report released on September 4th by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Supervisory Commission, Li Wenrong was found to have obstructed organizational review processes, accepted banquets and travel arrangements that could potentially influence the fair execution of public duties, illegally organized banquets paid with public funds, provided assistance for the promotion and job adjustments of others in violation of regulations, accepted gifts and money, and used his authority or position to assist his relatives in their business activities, engaging in corrupt practices. He disclosed undisclosed information on corporate restructuring, and abused his power for personal gain, colluding with businessmen and engaging in corrupt transactions for personal profit in engineering contracting, business operations, and project approvals, unlawfully receiving large sums of money.

The report further stated that Li Wenrong has been expelled from the Party, removed from his public positions, disqualified as a delegate to the 11th Party Congress of Yunnan Province, and has been handed over to the judicial authorities.

On March 18th, it was publicly announced that Li Wenrong had been removed from office.

Public records show that Li Wenrong, born in October 1962 in Zhaotong, Yunnan Province, previously served as a member of the Kunming Municipal Party Committee and Executive Deputy Mayor (at the prefectural level), Party Secretary and Deputy Director of the Yunnan Provincial Commission of Industry and Information Technology, and as the Mayor of Kunming in 2012, Secretary of the Qujing Municipal Party Committee in 2015, and member of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Qujing Municipal Party Committee in 2016.

In 2021, Li Wenrong was appointed as the deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Yunnan Provincial People’s Congress until the investigation was conducted.
