Former Deputy Director of the China Defense Science and Technology Bureau Zhang Jianhua Surrenders to Authorities

Former Deputy Director of the Chinese People’s Republic Defense Science and Industry Bureau, Zhang Jianhua, has turned himself in, making him the 24th senior official to be investigated this year.

According to a statement released on May 28 by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Zhang Jianhua, former party member and Deputy Director of the Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law. He voluntarily surrendered and is currently under disciplinary review and supervision investigation.

Prior to turning himself in, Zhang Jianhua made a public appearance 21 days earlier. According to an official WeChat message from the Yangzhou Eco-Technology New City, on the morning of May 7th, the Third Advanced Technology Achievements Transformation Conference and Military-Civil Fusion Technology Innovation Application Competition opened in Yangzhou. Zhang Jianhua attended and spoke at the event in his capacity as former Deputy Director of the Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau and Deputy Director of the National Defense Industry Science and Technology Commission.

Born in August 1961, Zhang Jianhua has worked in various positions in the Ministry of Ordnance Industry, the National Machinery Commission, China North Industries (Group) Corporation, China Ordnance Industry Corporation, and the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Commission.

In February 2005, Zhang Jianhua became the Director of the Military Project Review Center of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Commission. In January 2008, he was appointed as the Director and Party Secretary of the Military Project Review Center of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Commission. In November 2008, he was appointed as the Director and Party Secretary of the Military Project Review Center of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau, as well as the Director of the Development Research Center. In April 2009, he became the Director of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau. In January 2011, he was appointed as the Chief Engineer of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau. In January 2013, he became the Deputy Director and Party Member of the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau, and in October 2021, he was removed from office.

With Zhang Jianhua under investigation, the number of senior officials investigated this year has now reached 24, with 6 individuals investigated in May alone.
