On June 19th, Lu Guoqing, the former director of Xiangyin County People’s Hospital in Hunan province, tragically passed away after falling from a building. The hospital stated that Lu suffered from depression, while his family claimed it was due to health reasons that he jumped. However, internet users have raised suspicions of his involvement in corruption and suggested he may have taken his own life to protect others.
According to a report by The Paper on June 21st, multiple sources revealed that Lu Guoqing jumped from his residence in his housing complex at 9:20 am on June 19th. He resided in Building 12 but jumped from Building 17.
The hospital director, Jin Linyang, mentioned that Lu left a suicide note before the incident, citing unbearable physical pain, combined with depression and insomnia, as reasons for his drastic action. Jin also disclosed that Lu was suffering from depression, was on medication that he did not always take as prescribed, and had kidney problems including polycystic kidneys, rendering them mostly non-functional, leading to signs of uremia.
Jin further explained that Lu’s wife was a former chief nurse in the hospital’s operating room who had undergone breast cancer surgery in recent years. Their son had graduated from a prestigious university and was working in a financial institution, portraying their family life as happy and refuting rumors of being investigated by the discipline inspection commission.
Lu’s son reiterated that his father indeed jumped due to health reasons.
It was reported that Lu had medical tests conducted at his own hospital, where he deleted the original CT data, only known by the head of the radiology department, to conceal his condition from others. His funeral service took place on the evening of the 20th and cremation was carried out on the morning of the 21st.
Public records show that Lu Guoqing was born in 1969. In 2022, he served as the director of Xiangyin County People’s Hospital, later becoming the director of Xiangyin County General Hospital. On October 24, 2024, his position as director of the county general hospital was naturally relieved due to organizational restructuring.
Jin Linyang mentioned that Lu Guoqing “retired” due to reaching retirement age. Following his withdrawal from administrative duties last year, he was reassigned as a consultant at the health examination center of the county people’s hospital, possibly feeling a sense of loss in his new role.
However, many Chinese internet users have expressed doubts:
“Once the target is removed, everything is fine.”
“Some can finally sleep well now.”
“Our housing complex is also corrupt, leading to such tragic incidents.”
“Sacrificing oneself for the peace and prosperity of the family.”
“As long as he’s gone, others can relax.”
“The pressure on medical professionals is immense, many suffer from depression (discovered later), with much information circulating in unofficial channels. Waiting for official reports.”
“Externally claimed as such, but those in the know understand.”
“Many secrets gone with him, sigh.”
“Even at the end, it’s labeled as jumping off rather than falling off.”
Some netizens commented on the situation in Hunan, stating, “Why are there so many incidents happening in Hunan? It seems like a neglected gray area.” “Indeed, there have been quite a few incidents of people jumping off buildings in Hunan in the past couple of years.”
On a separate note, on the same evening of June 19, Liu Wenjie, the director of the Hunan Provincial Department of Finance, died after falling from his residence alongside two suspected perpetrators. The case remains unresolved to this day.
In another incident on the evening of June 19, the news of the passing of Sun Yin, the prominent female chairperson of Xi’an Tianlang Group in the real estate sector of Shaanxi, surfaced. The official obituary announced Sun Yin’s death due to ineffective medical treatment, but there were online rumors suggesting she committed suicide by jumping off a building.
