Fidelity Investment Data Breach Affects 77,000 Users

Fidelity Investments, one of the largest asset management companies globally, has become the latest U.S. company to fall victim to a massive data breach, affecting a total of 77,099 users. This incident marks the second data breach within 12 months for Fidelity Investments.

The recent breach occurred between August 17 and 19 when a hacker accessed users’ names and personal identification information, including social security numbers and driver’s license information. However, the affected users’ account details were not compromised.

In documents submitted to the Attorney General of Maine, Fidelity Investments stated that a third party accessed information in the company’s system through two recently created user accounts. The company did not specify how these accounts were able to access other users’ data.

Upon detecting the unauthorized activity on August 19, Fidelity took immediate steps to terminate the access. The company then initiated an investigation with the assistance of external security experts, confirming the leakage of personal information for 77,099 customers. The hackers did not access any users’ funds or accounts.

Fidelity Investments has a total of 51 million users. While there have been no reports of the leaked information being misused, the company is offering affected users 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services. Fidelity also advises individuals to remain vigilant, review their financial statements regularly, and report any suspicious or fraudulent activities. Users can contact Fidelity from Monday to Friday at 1-844-528-1265 for inquiries.

A Fidelity spokesperson stated in a statement to Nexstar, “We understand that our customers may have concerns about this incident, and we are dedicating resources to assist them.” “Fidelity is committed to serving customers and protecting their information.”
