After the conclusion of the college entrance examination on June 9th, a female student in Guangxi Guilin Guanyang County was captured by passersby while carrying her luggage home, a scene that touched numerous netizens.
In the video, she was wearing plain clothes and carrying two large bags full of items using a wooden stick as a shoulder pole. She appeared simple yet independent and capable. The short video sparked an outpouring of praise and comments from netizens, with remarks such as “This is the true face of a college entrance examination student,” “The older generation carries the weight of life with a shoulder pole, while the new youth carries hope with knowledge,” and “The girl is admirable, it suddenly moistened my eyes!”
According to the Purple Cow News, the girl carrying the shoulder pole is a student named Liu from the graduating class of Guanyang County Second Senior High School in Guilin. The video was taken on June 9th after the college entrance examination as she was preparing to return home with her mother.
The girl’s homeroom teacher, Ms. Chen, stated that on that day, Liu’s mother came to pick her up from school on a motorcycle. Due to the large number of people outside the examination room, Liu decided to carry her luggage by herself for a while and unexpectedly got captured on camera and the footage spread online. Liu is from a rural family where her father works away from home, and her mother takes care of the elderly and children. Their family is categorized as poverty alleviation households, and during her high school years, the school exempted her from accommodation fees to ease their burden.
According to a report by Far Horizons News, on June 11th, the female student Liu was contacted and shared her situation at that time and information about her family. She mentioned that she plans to find a summer job or set up a stall to sell cold noodles.
Liu expressed her gratitude for everyone’s concern, mentioning that she was unaware of being filmed at the time, and the person filming didn’t seek her consent. It was later her classmates and friends who informed her about it.
“In fact, my mother came to pick me up at the time, but I had more stuff to carry, so both of us carried it together. My mother walked behind me, and I walked ahead, only I was captured on camera.”
She mentioned she also has an older brother and that both her father and brother work outside, leaving her and her mother at home. Her mother is nearly 60 years old. She recalled a conversation before the college entrance examination when her mother asked if she needed her to come and accompany her for the exam, to which Liu bravely replied that she could handle it alone and let her mother focus on her chores at home.
“I am truly grateful to my parents. In some families, there might be biases towards sons over daughters, but in our family, my brother and I are treated equally, sometimes even in my favor, making my brother a little jealous. No matter the environment we are in, as long as we have our family together, it’s enough. We may not have flowers, but being together is like having our own bouquet.”
After the related reports were released, many enthusiastic netizens left comments offering help to Liu.
Mr. Zhang from Chengdu, Sichuan, mentioned that he was deeply touched after reading the reports and offered a summer job to Liu, such as helping with cleaning or tea-making at a teahouse in Chengdu.
Retired professor Mr. Luo from Wuhan University expressed his willingness to support Liu financially. He left comments on several short videos, hoping to get her family’s address as he is willing to support her education.
Mr. Luo mentioned seeing his past self in Liu, the girl with the shoulder pole. He expressed, “Now that I have the ability, I want to support her, but I haven’t been able to find her contact information.”
The kindness of these kind-hearted people was relayed to Liu, and she expressed her gratitude for everyone’s concern and generosity. She shared that her father and brother work away from home, leaving only her and her mother at home. Since her mother is getting older, during the summer break, she prefers not to go too far from home, hence looking for a summer job nearby.
Regarding the offers of financial assistance from netizens, Liu politely declined.
