The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that a food company is recalling certain frozen spinach products sold nationwide.
“Sno Pac Foods” based in Caledonia, Minnesota, is recalling its “Del Mar” 35-pound bulk organic frozen spinach and “Sno Pac” 10-ounce organic frozen chopped spinach due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
These spinach products are sold at retail stores across the country, but the company has not received any reports of illnesses related to the recalled spinach. The recall was initiated by the food company after a batch of spinach products tested positive for Listeria bacteria.
The recall notice does not specify which retailers are selling these products or the extent of the products affected.
The 35-pound products have batch numbers 250107A, 250107B, 250107C, 250107D, 2501071, and 2501073 with an expiration date of January 7, 2027.
The 10-ounce packaged products have batch numbers: SPM1.190.5 with an expiration date of July 9, 2027; SPC1.160.5 and SPC2.160.5 with an expiration date of June 9, 2027; and SPM1.097.5 with an expiration date of April 7, 2027.
According to the FDA, production of these products has been suspended during the investigation into the affected spinach.
Listeria bacteria is a type of bacteria that can cause serious illnesses and may lead to symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, imbalance, and seizures in infected individuals. Particularly vulnerable to these symptoms are the elderly, individuals with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, Listeria bacteria spread through food is the third leading cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the United States.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Sno Pac or Del Mar spinach should dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
