On the evening of September 27, a traffic accident occurred at the Guangzhou University City campus of South China University of Technology, resulting in one death and one injury. According to sources, the female victim had just celebrated her 18th birthday that day, and the incident has since garnered widespread attention online. On September 29, the related topic trended on Weibo.
On the evening of the 28th, the Panyu Public Security Bureau in Guangzhou reported that at 9:40 pm on September 27, a small car collided with two pedestrians on an internal road near Central East Road in Xiaoquwei Street. One person was declared dead after rescue efforts failed, while the other has been discharged from the hospital. The driver, Jin, has been taken into custody. Currently, Jin does not face suspicion of drunk or drugged driving, and the case is under further investigation.
However, the police did not disclose the identities of the South China University of Technology, the driver, or the victims.
Photos from the scene show a small car crashing into a roadside trash bin. According to a student familiar with the situation, the incident took place between the D4 faculty dormitories and C3 student dormitories at the University City campus of South China University of Technology, near a trash collection site located approximately 100 meters from the student dormitories. The accident resulted in the death of Lu, a 2025 electrical engineering student, and injuries to a dance major student. The driver responsible was Jin, a teacher at the university’s School of Arts.
The student revealed that they and the deceased Lu were classmates in the Electrical Engineering Class 5 of the 2025 cohort at South China University of Technology, having just begun their studies as freshmen about 20 days ago. It was Lu’s 18th birthday on the day of the accident, tragically coinciding with her involvement in the car crash shortly after celebrating.
An eyewitness told Jiemu News that they heard a loud “bang” at the time of the incident, initially assuming it was a car hitting an object, only to later discover that it was a person being struck.
“Many students went to see what happened, and everyone was very anxious,” the eyewitness said, adding that some students called the authorities, and soon after, school staff and police arrived to handle the situation.
On September 29, the topic stirred up discussions on Weibo.
Many netizens questioned, “How fast was the car going inside the campus to immediately kill someone?”, “Schools are places for studying, not racing tracks, why are cars driving recklessly?”, “I’ve noticed teachers driving around the campus with no order, there should be designated lanes for vehicles and pedestrians even on main roads”, “The school should separate pedestrian and vehicle traffic, strengthen security measures, this kind of incident shouldn’t happen repeatedly.” “I heard the driver initially fled, then it was said they were apprehended, is there a cover-up?”, “Severe punishment should be imposed on the perpetrator.”
