Fantasy Film Starring Pierce Brosnan as King, Imprisons “Mermaid” Fan Bingbing

In news dated October 2, 2024, the fantasy adventure film “The King’s Daughter”, starring “007” actor Pierce Brosnan, is set to premiere in Taiwan this October. The story is inspired by the mythical mermaids, with Fan Bingbing portraying a mermaid.

Directed and produced by Sean McNamara, the film features a star-studded cast including Pierce Brosnan, Kaya Scodelario from “Resident Evil: Retribution”, Benjamin Walker, and Fan Bingbing. Oscar winner Dame Julie Andrews serves as the narrator for the film.

“The King’s Daughter” follows the vibrant French King Louis XIV (played by Brosnan), who discovers the power of immortality possessed by mermaids. He dispatches the navy to capture a mermaid (played by Fan Bingbing) and brings her to the Palace of Versailles for confinement.

On the other hand, Louis XIV and his illegitimate daughter Marie (played by Scodelario) encounter the forbidden mermaid in the palace, and they become friends with her. Marie falls in love with Yves (played by Walker), a naval officer who guards the mermaid. As their relationships grow tighter, Marie decides to defy her father, rescue the mermaid, and conflict escalates.

Based on the novel “The Moon and the Sun”, the film beat George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel “A Game of Thrones” in 1997, winning the Nebula Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.

The film was shot in locations spanning France and Australia, with the main setting during King Louis XIV’s reign. Director McNamara obtained permission from the French government to film inside the Palace of Versailles, a move he found incredible as the French authorities welcomed the fantasy story presented in the script.

Screenplay for the film was written by James Schamus and Barry Berman, both acclaimed writers in the industry. Brosnan had already agreed to the role two years before filming began, expressing his immediate love for the story upon reading the script.

Director McNamara mentioned that Scodelario and Walker truly embodied romance, adventure, and true love in the film. Surprisingly, their on-screen romance transcended into real life, leading to a fulfilling family bond. Pierce Brosnan’s outstanding portrayal of King Louis XIV mesmerized the crew with his immortal charisma. Fan Bingbing’s talent shines as she embodies one of the world’s most beautiful mermaids, urging viewers to fall in love and enjoy her performance.

The much-anticipated film “The King’s Daughter” is set to premiere in Taiwan on October 9. The film has already garnered an impressive 80% audience freshness rating on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.
