Facebook’s Technical Mistake Leads to Thousands of Global Groups and Communities Being Blocked

On June 25, 2025, there was a sudden large-scale blocking event on social media platforms Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday, June 24. Many groups were blocked without warning, with no specific reasons provided and no means of appeal. This has led users to speculate that it may be due to recent AI moderation mechanisms misjudging the content.

Thousands of groups worldwide have been affected, covering themes such as hobbies like DIY, board games, parenting discussions, shopping tips, and promotional information. The impacted countries include the United States, Canada, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The reasons behind these mass blockings are still unclear, but many suspect it may be due to errors in the AI moderation system.

According to reports from the technology news website TechCrunch, many group administrators received vague notifications citing violations such as “terror-related content” or “nudity,” even though these groups did not actually post such content. The affected groups include pet owners, gamers, interior design enthusiasts, Pokémon fans, and mechanical keyboard enthusiasts. These are typically not groups that raise moderation concerns.

Many of the blocked groups are quite large, ranging from tens of thousands to millions of members. Some administrators have stated that multiple groups under their management were all blocked nearly simultaneously, losing access or being deleted.

Malay Mail reported that Malaysia’s tabletop gaming community, KakiTabletop, stated that their three Facebook groups have been inaccessible for public viewing since Tuesday due to Meta’s AI mass-blocking action. Although these groups can still be accessed by administrators, some have been deleted and their titles changed to blank “Group title pending.” KakiTabletop noted that Meta has promised to resolve this issue.

KakiTabletop mentioned that after multiple contacts with Meta’s business support team, they confirmed a technical issue with the Facebook system and pledged to restore the blocked groups within 48 hours.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone stated, “We have identified a technical error affecting some Facebook groups and are actively working on a fix.”
