Taiwanese meteorologists today (6th) said that Typhoon Halong is approaching super typhoon strength, but is expected to turn northeast over the southern sea of Japan, posing no direct threat to Taiwan.
The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan stated that Typhoon Halong, a mild typhoon, at 8 a.m. today was located at 25.2 degrees north latitude and 141.3 degrees east longitude, moving northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. The central pressure is 985 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center at 25 meters per second and maximum gusts at 33 meters per second. The radius of gale-force winds extends up to 120 kilometers (140 kilometers on the northwest side, 140 kilometers on the northeast side, 80 kilometers on the southwest side, and 120 kilometers on the southeast side).
Associate Professor Wu Derong of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan stated in the “Sky Leak Classroom” column of the Meteorological Application Promotion Foundation that based on the latest European model (ECMWF) simulation and the latest Central Weather Bureau’s “Path Potential Prediction Map,” Typhoon Halong is forecasted to make a large northeast turn over the southern sea of Japan. Despite the expected increase in intensity, approaching super typhoon status, it is distant from Taiwan and poses no direct threat.
Furthermore, he mentioned that according to the latest Central Weather Bureau’s “Path Potential Prediction Map,” Typhoon Medem is continuing its northwestward trajectory, with the center this morning already penetrating into Guangxi, continuing to affect Guangxi and the northern regions of Vietnam while gradually weakening.
Wu Derong elaborated that the latest European model simulation indicated that on Mid-Autumn Festival today, with the influence of the Pacific high pressure system, most areas will have sunny and hot weather. The UV index around noon will be excessive or dangerous, emphasizing the importance of sun protection and heatstroke prevention. There is a likelihood of brief, sporadic rainfall in mountainous areas in the afternoon.
He added that from the 7th to the 10th, there will be slightly increased moisture on the eastern side of Taiwan, with a chance of localized short-term rain showers in the east and along the northern coast. Overall, the weather will be mostly sunny with some clouds, a slight decrease in high temperatures in northern Taiwan, while daytime temperatures in other regions will remain relatively hot, with a probability of brief, localized showers in the mountains in the afternoon.
Looking ahead, Wu Derong stated that on the 11th and 12th, most areas will experience clear to partly cloudy skies with hot daytime temperatures. There might be sporadic, brief rain showers in the afternoon in mountainous regions, with a chance of isolated rain showers in the eastern parts of Taiwan.
