The European Parliament passed a resolution on the assessment report of the European Union’s foreign and security policy on April 2nd, condemning the Chinese Communist Party’s threatening actions in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that this demonstrates the strong support and consensus of the new session of the European Parliament towards Taiwan. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu expressed gratitude to the European Parliament for consistently demonstrating support for Taiwan through tangible actions.
The European Parliament passed the resolutions on the implementation reports of the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) with a high number of votes on the 2nd. The resolutions once again expressed concerns over China’s escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait and supported further deepening cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and the European Union on multiple fronts.
The CFSP resolution pointed out that the global order is shifting towards the Indo-Pacific region, and the EU must play a more active role and enhance visibility to maintain peace, freedom, stability, and a rules-based international order in the region. The resolution emphasized Taiwan as a key democratic partner of the EU in the Indo-Pacific region, calling on the EU and its member states to continue close cooperation with Taiwan to strengthen economic, trade, and investment ties, and encouraging the European Commission to commence preparatory work for investment agreement negotiations with Taiwan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release today (April 3) welcoming and expressing gratitude for the resolutions. It pointed out that China continues to take military provocative actions against Taiwan and obstruct Taiwan’s meaningful international participation by distorting UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. The European Parliament strongly condemned such actions by China.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China emphasized that China’s territorial claims over Taiwan have no basis in international law, and only the democratically elected government of Taiwan can represent the Taiwanese people. The ministry urged the EU and its member countries to send a clear and consistent message that any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion will not be accepted and will come with a high cost.
The European Parliament urged the European Commission and member states to formulate a unified response strategy to the situation in the Taiwan Strait and regularly provide impact assessments to the European Parliament to stay informed of the latest developments.
The CSDP resolution strongly condemned China’s increasing cyber attacks, cognitive warfare, military aircraft intrusions into Taiwan’s airspace, and malicious actions such as cutting undersea cables. It reiterated the EU’s firm commitment to maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, praised the rational restraint shown by the Taiwan government, urged China to exercise restraint and stop any further aggressive actions escalating tensions across the strait.
The resolution highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive defense strategy in the Indo-Pacific region for the EU, considering Taiwan’s leading role in high-tech fields and its extensive experience in countering China’s compound attacks, disinformation, and foreign interference. It called for enhanced regular exchanges with Taiwan on relevant security issues, sharing information on incidents such as undersea cable disruptions, and incorporating Taiwan’s experiences into the EU’s considerations for expanding multilateral cooperation and capability-building in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated that the European Parliament overwhelmingly passed a resolution on October 24 last year regarding China’s “misinterpretation of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and its continued military provocations against Taiwan,” demonstrating strong bipartisan support and consensus on Taiwan in the new (10th) session, which holds significant significance.
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu expressed sincere thanks to the European Parliament for its continued support through concrete actions to deepen the Taiwan-EU partnership and uphold a firm position in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He stated, “In the future, our country will continue to deepen cooperation and exchanges with the European Parliament on various fronts on the basis of our existing strong foundation, jointly strengthening democratic resilience, and constructing a solid network of mutually beneficial value alliances.”
