Germany’s famous octopus Paul made accurate predictions during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, capturing the attention of many. Now, as the Euro Cup, held every four years, takes place in Germany, it seems that another animal, an elephant, is following in Paul’s footsteps by successfully predicting the opening match’s result.
According to reports from the Associated Press, the 2024 Euro Cup kicked off in Munich, Germany on June 14th with the host team, Germany, facing Scotland. The result was a resounding victory for Germany, defeating Scotland with a score of 5-1.
On the day before the match, June 13th, in Thuringia, Germany, an elephant named Bubi at an animal sanctuary accurately predicted Germany’s victory in the opening game.
Bubi kicked a football towards a simple goalpost with the flags of Germany and Scotland on each side. The ball rolled towards the side with the German flag, indicating Germany’s anticipated triumph.
Originally residing in Italy, Bubi was later adopted by the animal sanctuary in Thuringia. Its caretakers discovered its love for football when a ball accidentally rolled into its enclosure, prompting Bubi to kick it back immediately.
The Euro Cup features 24 teams divided into six groups, with England (Group C) and France (Group D) as top contenders for the championship. These two teams stand out for their evident strength compared to other opponents. As the host team, Germany (Group A) enjoys the advantage of playing on home soil and aims to secure a spot in the championship game scheduled for July 14th in Berlin.
German defender Antonio Rüdiger shared his thoughts before the opening match, stating, “We are not just here to make up the numbers, but we still have to be humble.”
He added, “We have been through ups and downs to get here, which is why we must remain humble. The first match is crucial, and then we will see what unfolds in the remaining games.”
The reigning champions, Italy, are placed in Group B this year and must first overcome strong rivals like Spain within the group to defend their title.
