Just hours before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, France has entered a state of heightened security alert. The “EuroAirport” located on the border of France was temporarily closed due to a bomb threat, but later reopened.
In a report by “Le Montagnard” on Friday, the EuroAirport located on the border of France, Germany, and Switzerland announced an emergency evacuation on Friday morning due to a bomb threat, resulting in all flights being suspended and the airport temporarily shutting down.
The EuroAirport posted on its official website: “For security reasons, the terminal building must be evacuated and is currently closed.”
Later, the airport updated its website with a message stating that the airport had reopened and flights had resumed.
The airport is situated in Mulhouse on the French border, close to Basel in Switzerland and Freiburg in Germany. In 2023, it welcomed 8 million passengers.
According to Reuters, a France Air France plane preparing to depart for Paris from EuroAirport was forced to remain at the airport after receiving a bomb alert.
The Italian newspaper “Corriere Della Sera” reported that a France-bound flight to Paris also received a warning.
The police in Haut-Rhin, France confirmed that after the threat, “decontamination operations” had been completed and air traffic was gradually returning to normal.
At the end of last year, several French airports, including EuroAirport, had to evacuate personnel due to a series of false bomb threats.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics is set to begin at 7:30 pm local time on Friday, July 26th.
