On the first day of the “Golden Week” holiday in China, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck Feidong County, Hefei City, Anhui Province. This marked the third earthquake within two weeks and the sixth earthquake of magnitude 3 or above in the county this year.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 16:34 on October 1st in Feidong County, Hefei City, with a depth of 10 kilometers (31.97 degrees north latitude, 117.61 degrees east longitude).
Numerous local residents reported feeling the tremor vividly. Comments like, “I was lying on the sofa when I heard the TV make a noise, then the sofa shook slightly,” and “The chair suddenly shook, I knew it was an earthquake,” were common. Some said, “It was very noticeable on the Yao Hai side, I was asleep and woke up from the shaking,” and “I was working overtime when the tables and chairs shook, the balcony doors and windows creaked, the main door swung left and right, the tremor was evident, but not as strong as the previous 4.7 magnitude earthquake.”
“I felt the building swaying but why didn’t my phone receive an alert?” and “The tremor was noticeable, but I didn’t receive an alert.” People questioned why there was no push notification on their phones or from the government. Others mentioned living in old buildings and feeling the tremor clearly but not receiving any warnings.
“Endless earthquakes, living in tents every day, I can’t bear it anymore!” and “This is too frequent, can someone explain?”
Feidong County has experienced a total of six earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above this year. On February 24th at 18:13, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred with a depth of 15 kilometers. On May 12th at 2:32, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck with a depth of 15 kilometers. On September 14th at 5:12, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit with a depth of 10 kilometers. On September 18th at 20:08, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 12 kilometers. Finally, on September 25th at 19:29, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook the county at a depth of 12 kilometers.
Notably, the last three earthquakes occurred within the past two weeks.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center’s rapid report catalog, within a 200-kilometer radius of the epicenter, there have been a total of 15 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above in the past five years. The largest of these was the 4.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Feidong County on September 18th, located just 1 kilometer from the epicenter of this recent earthquake.
